Not what is used to be

Pros

Railroading is a very cool business with a ton of problems to solve. Under Young or Koraleski, employees were valued and layoffs at least came with a good severance based on years of sevice.

Cons

Fritz, Vena, and PSR led to the industry absolutely losing its moral standing. Safety is undermined in lieu of profits. Prefers to ignore or cover up problems rather than fixing them. Favors company 'yes-men' who do not challenge any of the views or ideas of their superiors. Layoffs always a fear, and now they are often offering "transfer" to low-desirable jobs or you lose your job; no severance packages of yesteryear.

Cons

Monotonous work in harsh conditions. Real money demands scrapping social life.

Cons

- Every couple of years - massive layoffs in the name of profit - Employees treated as commodity (you are just a FTE, always on the chopping block if the share price dips) - not much appreciation for skills - all employees 'interchangeable' management
