Pros

You get a pension and if you stay longer than five-six years you’ll earn enough to rent or buy a place to stay in the cheaper parts of the state.

Cons

The company pays well for most states, but in California you will be living on an extremely tight budget and Union Pacific refuses to even consider the idea of a C.O.L.A. Despite the fact that many of it’s employees live out of their cars because they can’t afford to live a reasonable life compared to the cost of living and the managers say that it’s a good thing because that makes employees want to stay marked up and eager to work. Due to this we can’t convince anyone to stick around long enough to actually work, so they just hire anyone willing to apply and offer them basically zero training knowing they won’t be around more than a few months at most.

Managment VS union employees

Pros

decent pay some training offered

Cons

I worked as a field engineering manager. what surprised me most is the amount of hatred between the unions and the company management, in some instances they act like real enemies. the unions will defend their employees even when they are wrong. the work life balance is a disaster. working 24/7. when they made cuts( layoffs) it was even worse. Employees that have been working at this for long time really hate the direction of the company which is led by management. Overall very unhappy environment.

Pros

Money is decent if you want to live in the hood or have a mobile home Insurance doesn't cost you too much

Cons

Worthless union dues You'll be on call if your lucky, what I mean by that is you WILL get furloughed So you will never have consistent paychecks being low seni wienie You won't have a personal life working here, you never when your going to work or when your coming home Zero job security, the company keeps threatening to do 1 man crews which means no conductor
