Belly of the beast

Pros

Oh wow—safety first, clearly. Nothing says “we care” quite like management’s relentless hobby of trying to fire employees, all under the noble banner of keeping everyone safe. And the dedication! Drones in the sky, managers hiding in bushes, stalking, watching, sneaking around, slapping red flags and tags on the tracks like they’re playing an extreme version of hide-and-seek-you're-fired. Truly inspiring. Union Pacific’s commitment to safety is so strong, it almost feels… personal. I like that. Yeah the money is good, but you sell your soul to the beast.

Cons

Let’s be honest, Union Pacific doesn’t just employ you—it owns you. Your time, your availability, your personal life—24/7. Union Pacific tells you this during hiring, but no one truly understands how extreme it is until they’re trapped in it. The resentment from train crews is constant and justified. Morale is crushed by endless pounding of the rules, micromanagement, and nonstop manpower cuts, all clearly driven by profit over people. Management preaches safety and accountability while simultaneously pushing crews harder with fewer resources. The message to employees is clear: you are replaceable. That's why distrust runs so deep. Everyday living in fear of being set up to fail and getting fired. This company didn’t end up with a dark, bitter culture by accident. Leadership and company profits created it—and continues to reinforce it every single day.

Pros

Great money Flexible hours depending on what job you get If in a yard you can work 8-12 hour shifts and still go home at the end of the day Sometimes there's nothing to do so you just chill cause something broke else where and stopped all work you could do Great health insurance Stock exchange program slightly worse but its still around If you can throw a switch and communicate effectively you can make it anywhere on the railroad Some really cool and interesting co-workers

Cons

On call depending on what job you have Working with random people nearly every day unless they are regulars If on the Road you are never home but make 3x the money Many ways to get fatally injured Loud Noises Somewhat physically demanding Weather conditions heavily affect your work Managers are constantly on the hunt to fire you Thrown to wolves is universally accepted truth that the training is terrible and will never prepare you for how to work when most jobs are extremely different. Big egos from everyone Seniority will determine your experience every single day for the entirety of you career, bigger fish can screw you over and push you out of a current job you might have gotten used to or liked
