Pros

Great place to work once you get your foot in the door. Competitive pay and decent benefits. Work hours can be beneficial for single employees.

Cons

Poor management. Layoffs can be at a moment notice. It's hard to tell what the future brings in this type of business.

Pros

Strong company with sustainable competitive advantage given the very low risk of a new railroad entering the market. This enviable position provides rare stability in an increasingly competitive global marketplace.

Cons

The railroad is a large company with over a 150 years of history. For better or worse, the company is slow to adopt change and has a low tolerance for risk. Innovation is rare. This is often a source of frustration for the ambitious. Railroads operate 24 hours per day, 7 days per week and 52 weeks per year. Work-life balance is difficult to achieve, especially for those in Operations.
