Pros

Truly loved working for a nonprofit and knowing what a positive impact United Way of Escambia County has on the community and the importance of the work it does.

Cons

You are thrown into the job and are “trained” by your superior. Your superior has probably only been there a month and has no idea what he or she is doing. No accountability for those in mid to upper management. They are free to wander around the office and watch YouTube half of the day and take 2 hour lunches. Extreme regular tardiness (20-40 minutes or more) is commonplace for some employees and nothing is done about it.

Pros

- Straightforward, simple work - A lot of holiday office parties, opportunities to volunteer - Some colleagues are super supportive and friendly

Cons

- Low pay - IEUW uses AmeriCorps funding to staff lower-level program coordinators. Pay comes out to about $7 an hour. Ironic that IEUW wants to help lower income kids from the Inland Empire go to college but then pays desperate college grads less than minimum wage. - Other than 211 and some college-awareness work, the community programs are feel-good, very surface-level solutions to systemic problems in the Inland Empire. We give processed, salty food to under-resources kids but don't fund partner programs that teach healthy eating.

Pros

Colleagues are nice, mean well and believe in the mission. Management is trying to improve employee satisfaction.

Cons

Management is terrible. Local United Ways don't respect direction coming from UWW because everything is decentralized. Organization is trying to do too much at the same time, setting up unrealistic expectations and unclear deadlines. Not adapting quickly enough to changes. Mission statement is heartwarming and fuzzy but it's not how management treats its staff - this is a sentiment across many departments. Unless there's a change in senior management, the work culture will stay the same. Work-life balance is a sham. I would not have joined if I had known ahead of time.
