Pros

I have LOVED my time with Univar for the past couple years. I have a wonderful team, manager, pay is ok, and acceptable benefits. Up until about August that is.

Cons

The extremely poor choice to merge with LN and lay off hundreds and hundreds of valuable employees, to hire contractors in their place. What a shame. Your customers aren’t pleased. Your contractors are beyond over worked and under trained. Thus dropping like flies. Your new customer solutions “supervisors” in Dublin are AWFUL. I mean I have never spoken with less competent, less willing to help supervisors in my life. If I was reporting to them I’d quit too, like many of the contractors have. Do they honestly find themselves that self important? It is mind blowing that Univar would drag their customers and LOYAL employees on like this. Surely they can tell how little we feel valued as of late. Customer service week was a joke back in October. $22 gift cards mostly geared towards contractors. The overall morale for your long term employees from customer service to ops to transportation is just depleted. A company where people matter???

Pros

There are reasonable benefits like 401k match, insurance, etc. The company has tried to make the environment more lax over time (i.e. moved to PTO plan and casual in the office). They have some events to treat employees every so often.

Cons

That being said, the environment is rigid and strict (speaking from corporate office experience). PTO balance is relatively low compared to most companies nowadays. There is no work from home unless you have a manager who is okay with it. More than likely not. Many managers have limited people management experience, so there’s micromanagement and office politics (i.e. being thrown under the bus for others mistakes or lack of competency). There are some good people who mean well, but there are a lot of people who aren’t fit for the roles they occupy. You will find that managers have preferences and simply put others on PIP’s to chase them out over time. There aren’t many good food options near the Downer’s Grove office and the cafeterias in the complex they’re in are terrible. Upper management is also not very transparent about the company’s direction, there’s a lot of secrecy at the various levels of management on many things. Generally, the culture doesn’t emphasize a lot of respect between coworkers, so unless you have a thick skin this isn’t a positive environment.

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and experience with us. We know that creating a new culture and work environment takes time and we appreciate the insights that current and former employees share as we work to shape a place where the best want to work. Our leaders are actively making improvements to our office environments, including a complete remodel of our Downers Grove headquarters, as well as developing new leadership training opportunities for managers. These are just some examples of the culture we are building where people matter.

Pros

Pay and benefits but still not enough as it has become a revolving door Decent people with experience that are stuck because they are making too much Great Acronyms

Cons

Every department is frustrated and not for the customer ..all about hitting metrics and staying off radar ....management decisions made at top with consultants’ input and left for local to live with decisions and suffer the consequences ...can’t get an answer for a customer
