Unlock is a new company formed from a handful of acquired companies in the healthcare marketing space. The integration of these organizations has created a tough work environment for employees. There are internal power struggles as some in upper management struggle for self-preservation and to retain power and relevance. This trickles down to a toxic, blame-game environment that empowers bullying and an “every person for themselves” culture. It is difficult watching talented colleagues get targeted in these power struggles and bullies being backed up by senior leadership. As as employee, I find myself walking on eggshells and hoping I am at a minimum adequately performing my job. It is expected that processes and expectations will change with the integration, but it is not always communicated to the staff. As a private equity backed company, I fully expect layoffs to happen every quarter. Add this to the mix of power struggles, backstabbing, internal alliances, not knowing who to trust… employee morale is terrible. I’m afraid the chaos will only hurt the business creating more instability and tolerated bad behavior.

I strongly urge anyone considering a position with this company to think carefully before accepting an offer. What initially appears as a promising opportunity is quickly overshadowed by a toxic, unethical, and unstable environment. This company operates on a "who you know" basis, rewarding personal connections over actual merit or hard work. A large majority of the hires and promotions are individuals who worked with the CEO and President at their previous company. If you're not part of this inner circle, don’t expect any career advancement. Your hard work and dedication will go unnoticed while others are fast-tracked simply because of their past affiliations. The environment thrives on favoritism, and professional growth here is reserved for a select few. The work culture is suffocating, with employees constantly living in fear of layoffs. The CEO and leadership team set a horrible precedent by sending emails in the middle of the night—sometimes at 2 or 3 a.m.—creating a sense of constant urgency and burnout. If you value work-life balance, you won’t find it here. You’ll be expected to juggle the responsibilities of multiple people, often without support or acknowledgment. The company recently went through several rounds of layoffs, however one of the most disturbing was a long-standing, VERY pregnant employee who had dedicated years to the company. Despite her commitment, her and her counterpart were both laid off without hesitation, only to be replaced by a former colleague of the head of HR. This unethical move was an unsettling reminder that loyalty and hard work mean nothing here and these were two highly respected, highly visible extremely hard working employees who did not at all deserve what happened to them... and the replacement? A joke. It’s worth noting that the head of HR, who was involved in these questionable decisions, also recently stepped down... but she had to get her buddy in first! Don't worry though, the lack of empathy and ethics displayed throughout the process remains a constant undercurrent in the company's leadership. Adding insult to injury, the company spent over half a million dollars on a lavish company retreat, bragging about it in every meeting. Yet, most employees were forced to share rooms with people they had NEVER met in person and anyone who raised concerns was branded as "not being a team player." After weeks of backlash, they grudgingly allowed single room requests—but only for "medical or extremely personal" reasons, forcing some to disclose personal health information just for basic privacy. Shortly after this expensive, tone-deaf retreat, is when the layoffs were announced. The severance packages? Laughable. They were so meager that most employees wouldn’t even be able to cover groceries for the month. This was after repeated promises of "stability, growth, and support" from leadership. In reality, the layoffs were a transparent attempt to recover from reckless spending, designed to boost the company's "fun" image on LinkedIn while undermining the very people who make the company function. If you take this job, be prepared to sacrifice any semblance of personal time. Emails, updates, and video messages from the CEO will flood your inbox at all hours of the night. There is no respect for your time or mental well-being. The pressure and stress will chip away at your mental health, and the lack of boundaries will make it impossible to sustain a healthy work-life balance. Beware of glowing Glassdoor reviews—many of them are written by upper-level executives who are trying to protect their bonuses and cushy positions. The reality is that this company is incredibly unstable, plagued by mismanagement, and extremely detrimental to your long-term career growth. I want to make it clear that I was not affected by the layoffs, and I am not a disgruntled former employee seeking revenge. I chose to leave for my own mental health and professional future and want to save you from what we have been going through. The toxic environment, unethical leadership, and false promises were simply too much to endure. Save yourself the grief, stress, and years of regret. Look elsewhere for a company that will respect and value you—because you certainly won’t find it here.
