Pros

The people are great! And the snacks, but that's pretty much it...I mean, I worked with some pretty awesome individuals but that's probably the only positive thing I can think of.

Cons

My entire hiring process, VSA prided themselves on their culture and how great it was which was the case for about 2 months of working there...until the first round of layoffs. Over the next few months, 3 more rounds of layoffs followed and then the culture of the company vanished completely. The vibe was weird. Layoffs and people leaving VSA became the new norm for everyone. A lot of incredibly talented people were gone. It became a sad place to be. My own job security was in question for many months and I never felt completely wanted there. Everyone was on edge for the last year I was working there. This blew my chances at any growth within the company, which ultimately led me to leaving myself. It was for the best. Who wants to work for a company where you feel worried you might be the next one to go every time you walk into the office? Not me.

Sad to watch

Pros

What remains of its reputation, plus a few people with great talent and big hearts.

Cons

Watching a formerly great brand and design firm slowly cut its talent to the bone, and beyond. And living with the anxiety over whether you'll be next on the layoff list. VSA is simply living month to month, hoping new revenue will show up. Careers used to be be built here, but now it's a place to get out of.

Pros

VSA has some great individual contributors. Unfortunately, most of them are in lower/mid-level roles and tend to leave, get laid off, or never have good opportunities to lead projects. Depending on your team and project, the flexibility that remote work allowed was a big plus. The recent return to office policy will change that. VSA is willing to invest in extracurricular work if you can upsell it to management and plan to share learnings with the company afterward.

Cons

Management/C-suite is secretive and makes a lot of promises with very little positive outcome or change. Most managers at the company are people willing to bend under the pressure of those above them or the client, which causes a huge lack of creativity and no innovation. Client Experience/Account Managers are huge 'yes-men' and overpromise quite a lot to clients, resulting in intense crunch periods for the rest of the team, feeling very unfair. Project management varied greatly from project to project, with most projects feeling frenetic and unorganized. For an agency with a large creative legacy, their current scoped work is very corporate and allows for very little design exploration. No actual investment in what makes design/strategy agencies competitive in 2023. Constant talk of AR/VR/NFTs/experience design, with absolutely no follow-through. Culture tends to follow 'whoever is the loudest in the Zoom call', leading to tense conversations and arguments in team meetings. Sometimes in front of clients too. Zero pay transparency, non-competitive salary, and lackluster benefits. Three layoff periods during my time at VSA hurt employee morale and many people who got laid off were loyal, hard workers.
