Pros

Constantly evolving and trying new technologies and approaches to software engineering. Great benefits.

Cons

Next to impossible to innovate, given the heavy red tape and preconceived notations of the "Vanguard way" towards software engineering. Way too much prescriptive managing at the senior levels and above.

Pros

Vanguard is a good company with an agreeable mission. Employee benefits are good, and job security is easy to achieve (often to a fault).

Cons

It's not news that Vanguard pays less than other employers in the area. They have less than competitive compensation packages and spend little effort on employee retention. During my time there, I was consistently a high performer and asked several times for a fair pay adjustment. At one point, I was told that the request had been escalated to the CEO's table (which sounded far fetched to begin with), and ultimately I never heard back. Vanguard has a very hierarchical structure and it's easy to move up the chain if you can sweet talk the management team. For IT employees, just get an AWS certification and you are half-way there. Performance management is laughably inconsistent and hard workers are often not rewarded. The culture promotes extroverted individuals (which can be tough in IT) who don't question decision making from top level management. Challenging the status quo will get you moved to another department. Vanguard HR and recruiting are a joke and there is zero accountability in the "work" they do. During my time there I heard of multiple cases of a senior manager in IT harassing employees. Those cases were reported to HR, who did nothing supposedly because the manager had a "good" track record for success at the company. Recruitment arm is unprofessional and irresponsible. I've referred several people to apply there and every single person had awful experiences with Vanguard recruiters. Bad interview scheduling, misinformation about roles, and lack of communication.
