Pros

Teammates and other boots on the ground coworkers are generally nice, supportive, and collaborative. Everybody feels like, well, we're all in this together, we may as well try make the best of the situation.

Cons

Management is poor from the front-line on up, and this is especially true of those who have been there for years and were elevated to management without any previous management or leadership experience. Perceived appearance of promoting only those that get along with upper management is the reality. Contrary to what they say their company values are, what they do is foster a culture of meanness and bullying. Leadership just doesn't care about anything except keeping their customers happy at the expense of their human resources. And the stock price. Everybody cares about the stock price.

Pros

Very smart and capable engineering team, profitable SaaS product, and overall a "safe" work environment provided you do exactly as management tells you do. Development moves decently fast paced for an already large, mature product.

Cons

The biggest con is poor management. It was better when the company was smaller, but now there are way too many managers all trying to impress their respective managers rather than do their job. They've developed a toxic culture where they expect their employees to behave more like corporate slaves rather than free-thinkers. They have driven away a good number of excellent engineers/managers simply because they were too outspoken or disagreed with their processes. Management is always focused on customers and never on employee success. They would rather hire someone with questionable experience than to raise salary and promote from within. There is a power imbalance between product managers, DEVs and QAs resulting in a constant push for new features rather than fixing current issues. There is a big emphasis on speed rather than quality, resulting in legacy code being littered everywhere. Overall, this is not a company for ambitious people.

Toxic Marketing Dept

Pros

Brand new building is awesome. Free meals on certain day of week.

Cons

The marketing dept is “lead” by an oppressive, and some might say,at times a verbally abusive CMO that lacks any kind of genuine empathy, and sincerity. Rather than offer advice or support, they will break you down emotionally and humiliate you in public. I sincerely wish this was not the case. That being said, they have good qualities, as does every human being. The CMO is extremely intelligent and has a good sense of humor. The revolving door in marketing is an embarrassment. But HR does not care. They have done and will do nothing. Ever. The CMO is liked by the founder. So, there you go. Product marketing roles are vacated often, only second to event marketing. This turn over is unprecedented. When brought in as a sr manager or higher, you are not trusted to manage your own events, or projects, you are always directed to “do it in a specific way”. A way that is generally not best practices and that is time consuming. Often, I felt like I was always taking one step forward and five steps back. It became demoralizing. Often I worked until 10 or 11pm three to four times a week. The CMO also has this expectation that you should work weekends. They have scheduled meeting on weekends. The environment was thick with dispare, frustration and a lot of confusion. I know of several people that quit with even having another job. This is how desperate the situation becomes. The group could be an amazing, fun, supportive, but sadly it is not, and I’m afraid it will never be, as this has been a problem group for several years. It just won’t change. Also I feel I must mention not all peers in this group are forthright and one person lacks integrity, values and will throw you under the bus and has a “ better you than me” mentality. So please consider seriously if you take a job in this marketing group. Best of luck.
