Toxic Corporate Culture

Pros

Veolia has strong benefits and some fantastic people who work in the field. They are smart, dedicated, and professional. They succeed in spite of the most toxic corporate culture I have ever seen.

Cons

Those who work in Chicago, if they are being honest, will describe the culture of "throwing others under the bus" if it serves them. This also comes from the many French expats who work there who describe a similar culture in Paris. HR is a joke and they have fired most of the competent staff while maintaining the corporate butt kissers. People are promoted for who they know not what they do. It often feels like a political environment more than a business one in that what you say to whom is the single most critical aspect. The new CEO is a dark cloud hanging over the organization.

Pros

You can get away with being lazy and insubordinate because management can’t afford to lose any more workers.

Cons

Pay is well below industry standard. Most employees find out they can make much more elsewhere, so they’re gone within their first year. If you do stick around, you’ll constantly find yourself training new employees, which means you’re always going to be doing all the work. If you get injured at work you’ll have to sit on a conference call for hours with a person who isn’t a doctor, so the company can try and weasel out of paying you. This creates a culture of workers that work through injuries because reporting it is a colossal headache. They claim to be all about this “safety culture” but really that consists of slideshows and e-learning. If you point out safety concerns they are ignored.

Poor senior leadership

Pros

Decent benefits: commuter, phone etc.

Cons

No accountability for performance. Most employees I have interacted with like to push work into others or it doesn’t get done at all, with no consequences. No incentive to actually exceed expectations. Senior management is old and lacks any imagination. The employees that excel in their roles are under paid and usually leave after they can’t bear the frustration any more.
