      Got the little things right, but not the big things

      Pros

      I worked at a division of Verisk located in Texas. The office was nice with a fairly casual dress code. They were great at doing little things like monthly employee relations events, a program to recognize colleagues for going above and beyond, and closing early prior to holidays. The pay was good given the area. You also have access to all open job listings across the entire company.

      Cons

      Most of the employees have been working there for 10+ years and most of them doing the same job for that amount of time. As a result, management was really hands off and put very little effort into working on career development with anyone. It was more like they just let everything run on auto pilot. Also, they tend to hire from outside to fill open management positions. Several shockingly sexist comments were made by two members of management in my presence on multiple occasions. I couldn't believe such things still occur in a professional environment in 2015. If you want a job doing the same thing day after day with little career growth or development, then it's a great place to work. If you are ambitious and want a company that offers a career path, you may want to look elsewhere.

We appreciate your advice to management and, in fact, in the last 9 months or so, have been working closely with Executive Management to enhance managerial competence across the enterprise. For example, we are currently planning a series of training programs for all managers based on the acclaimed book, The Extraordinary Coach, Our focus continues to be on developing our culture based on the three tenets of The Verisk Way: Serve, Add Value, and Innovate. Of course, your report of inappropriate comments is very disturbing and we have already begun an investigation and education program in our Texas locations to ensure that all employees are treated with respect and dignity.

      Pros

      Smart People. Easy to find people to make friends with. Great continuing education support. Flex Hours; not often working much more than 40 hour weeks. Easy to access via public trans. Recent push to modernizing company; social media, employee benefits, etc.. but still lacking.

      Cons

      Typically paid less than others with my job title & experience in the area Lame office work space; cube city, no gym, no daycare, barely free coffee Expensive Parking & bad traffic if you want to drive to work People have been here 40+ years which is nice in some ways, but upward mobility isn't always easy Promotions are too structured/not based on performance enough Considering the large size of the company, poor corporate outreach; though this is improving Not very flexible with working from home. Quality IT support can be hard to come by.

      Thanks for your input. Our management teams are currently working with the feedback from the employee engagement survey the corporation implemented last autumn. At the top of the list of concerns are the issues around work environment and flexibility. Look for opportunities to make suggestions to your local management team on ways we can enhance the work experience here.
