Pros

Richmond is an amazing city. Many great people to work with and for. Great gym and perks (outdoor gear rental is super cheap). Lots of money being spent on buildings.

Cons

Moderate dysfunction seems to be the norm within the research community. Depending on where you work as a graduate student, prepare to be expected to work incredibly hard for little thanks and absolutely no benefits (e.g. healthcare). Very hierarchical. Not much synergy between departments, labs.

Pros

I had a job during college which is more than a lot of people could say.

Cons

We were scheduled for more hours than allowed, and would get in trouble for working over, but they would never hire anyone new to help staff.
