Pros

-VCU offers a vast network of employees with different expertise, so you feel that you can talk to different people and bounce around ideas about your professional interests and goals -It's been my experience to have great co-workers who are generally sharp and down to earth -There's lots of young talent which fosters a sense of rapid growth and change -The institution engages with the community in various ways, which contributes to a good work culture

Cons

-I've found that promotions/upward mobility are not well integrated into the human resources structure -There are many part time workers, limited to working 29 hours per week on average per year, which can be disincentivizing

Pros

FT employees can take 6 credits per semester for free. The benefits are good and we get almost two weeks off for Christmas. I have a schedule that is somewhat flexible. Nice people. Raises are small and contingent upon state congress.

Cons

Can be a lot of red tape to get anything done and you will never find a parking spot closer than 6 blocks.

Frustrating and contradictory

Pros

Pay scale is fair, and city is a good location.

Cons

Diversity of applicants creates huge disparities in preparedness for college. This also makes for difficult class function, and there does not appear to be strong disciplinary support for instructors. Class size and support is poor.
