Pros

Beautiful campus, high energy, great town.

Cons

Depends on what college/office you work in. Some areas are much more flexible and allow employees to take advantage of benefits like flexible work hours, telework, etc. Other colleges/offices refuse to allow their employees to take advantage of university policies. No opportunities for travel to conferences, membership in professional organizations, etc., for staff in my office. Salary increases don't keep up with increases in health insurance, so it's impossible to get ahead.

Pros

If you are a motivated, independently-driven person, VT can offer an environment where you make most of the day-to-day calls on what you do, how you do it, and when you do it. The environment is far more about what you get done, than the micromanagement of how you get it done. Those with an entrepreneurial spirit are never at a shortage of interesting things to work on. The pay is competitive with much of industry, and the schedule flexibility is very nice.

Cons

Pay raises are infrequent, and generally small. (This is a state government job.) Room for long-term upward growth can be limited if you don't hold advanced degrees.

Pros

The leadership is stellar, the support is unmatched, and the pay is very fair. On top of all of that, the benefits package is second to none. Take a job with Virginia Tech without hesitation.

Cons

Traveling to and from the Blacksburg campus can be difficult although the campus and the town are wonderful places to live and work.
