Virginia Tech’s Industrial & Systems Engineering (ISE) department is an excellent place to pursue a graduate degree. The environment is genuinely supportive—faculty and staff truly care about your progress and long-term success. You’re surrounded by mentors who invest in your growth, encourage collaboration, and give you the freedom to explore your own research ideas. The department combines strong academic rigor with a positive, welcoming culture. Students have access to high-quality resources, outstanding faculty, and opportunities to engage in meaningful, real-world projects. Overall, VT ISE provides a nurturing, motivating space where you can develop as a researcher, teacher, and professional. Highly recommend for anyone considering graduate studies in industrial and systems engineering.

Cons

Nothing major. Like any PhD program, it can be demanding at times, and workload can fluctuate depending on research and teaching responsibilities. But the department is supportive, and these challenges are typical of graduate school rather than specific to VT ISE.
