Pros

This opportunity provides for a lot of time off, flexible work environment, and not too stressful. The Blacksburg community, including the Virginia Tech community, are also some of the most pleasant people I have had the opportunity to work with.

Cons

It did not provide me with skills out of college to prepare me for work outside of a state funded organization. The pace is considerably slower than what is experienced in for-profit organizations. Furthermore, opportunities for advancement and salary increases are severely limited. Unless academia is your direction, then this type of position may not be for you due to it's lack of upward mobility.
