Pros

Worked at VTCRI. Loved that there was a shuttle from Blacksburg. Had a great experience with the staff. Everyone was super helpful and wanted to help me learn as much as I could. I gained a lot of experience and really found my passion for research. Facilities were brand new and it was great working in a new building.

Cons

I didn't like the commute to Roanoke. Sometimes the buses would be delayed due to an accident and we wouldn't make it home for an hour and a half. But other than that everything else was perfect.

Pros

Very nice environment, dealing with like-minded people. Try to find a research topic that is of interest to you.

Cons

GRA positions are not always guaranteed and you might have to depend on other sources (e.g., wage position) temporarily. However, this is planned to changed soon with 5-year guaranteed funding for anyone entering for a PhD program.
