Pros

Pay, benefits, opportunity for international travel and/or interaction with other cultures, opportunity to live in San Francisco and reverse commute, opportunity to work for one of the great business stories of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Cons

Association culture (pre-IPO) is still alive in some pockets. Visa was a place for mediocre people to go and have a comfy 20 year run with minimal effort due to the duopoly with MasterCard. Some association dinosaurs still roam the halls. The association culture bred a level of pettiness and politics I have never seen in any other organization. Meetings after meetings after meetings. You're only one re-org away from working for a horrible person. Payments industry is dull, dull, dull to begin with, but when you layer on aging, mediocre bankers and ex government (Fed) executives who land at Visa to put a cherry on top of their mediocre careers, it becomes not just dull but soul-destroying.

Pros

A good work life balance is VE's main attraction. Also it has a leading position in the market at present and thus offers opportunities to really get a good grounding in the payments services industry

Cons

The very top management are not great leaders with limited external experience. Any challenge is taken personally and decision making is weak. Association model is reflected internally by slow reaction to market forces with confused vision for the future

Pros

Visa pays well and has reasonably good benefits. This and the work-life balance encouragement keeps the many gifted creative people from leaving in this era of joblessness.

Cons

The company continues to exist as two entities: 1. Product/Business, 2. Technical/Delivery. Product org is segmented by ... well.. "Product", and Technical is sliced into functional silos. There are "product" teams, but the notion of teams that work together on common Product goals does not extend to the Technical-side. Product tells Technical what it wants and Technical figures out how to piece it together usually taking much longer than it would if technical staff were part of the same team as product staff sharing common goals and deliverables. It's been years since the IPO and Visa is still fundamentally organized the same way.
