Pros

Not being in an office has some benefits particularly in avoiding manager hovering or continuous micromanagement. There is a sense of independence being out in the field and calling the shots.

Cons

I worked under someone who had terrible people skills which caused many to quit in order to retain their self esteem She pressured, bullied, and accused employees and then fired those who she could not dominate. Granted, many deserved being let go and a trial by fire ordeal eliminated the weakest. The remaining workers were forced to drive too many miles because of this attrition. We continuously had to deal with a belligerent respondents as well. Then there is the added danger of the highway - saw many dangerous flaming wrecks and had some close calls.

Pros

Some great people and interesting opportunities. If you are on the right projects working with people who care about the work being done, it can be a nice and rewarding place to work.

Cons

Lots of political in-fighting, especially at the more senior levels, which trickles down into the more junior levels. Lack of promotion from within and lack of opportunities for advancement make it hard to advance beyond the level you are hired at.

Pros

Very fast response and follow up my online resume I submitted with Westat.

Cons

Spent an hour on an overly long phone interview. I was told it was "mandatory" to study materials in advance of this interview, so in preparation I did do as asked. Next I was given short notice to meet for the third, in person interview - while previously being told I would be notified during an exact specified week and to expect a call in that time frame - instead it came a week later and in short notice. I drove miles out of my way for this last minute interview. I was kept again in a long interview for an hour during the face-to-face interview. Finally I was told I would be notified of the hiring decision soon, in a week or so. No word -- No letter, no phone call. Nothing. Waste of time, with no acknowledgement one way or another. I guess Westat does not have to bother with any follow through to job applicants. Speaks volumes as to how they treat people, so I expect Westat employees to be equally disappointed with Westat.
