Pros

The people I worked with and around were all wonderful and kind. The workplace is unionized, which is fantastic.

Cons

The HR department is a mess and terribly disorganized (although the actual people are very sweet). The institution definitely takes advantage of temp workers. They use them in lieu of permanent workers to do needed labor and not just project based work. They say there's not enough money in the budget... mmhmm. The very majority of the lower and mid-level workers are women. Vast majority of those at the top (the high earners) and men. Don't expect to make more than $70k a year (for NYC that's a pittance).

Pros

The Whitney does a great job at picking candidates to work on the visitor services team if only they knew how to keep them.

Cons

No growth opportunities, very poor communication in regards to management and long hours sometimes 12 hour shifts, schedule changes sometimes as soon as the day before your shift. They keep a lot of the staff in a temporary position so if you have your hopes up to go full time, stop hoping it’s not going to happen, no benefits, no job security, you’re paid minimum wage, micromanaged and watched like a hawk. The list goes on and on. Disappointed overall with the negligence taking place.

Pros

Good pay and benefits. Usually working in a clean environment.

Cons

Sometimes work requires plunging toilets and snaking drains for the kitchens. The building is slowly degenerating into a mess mechanically. Many leaks may be fixed but fears of the roof leaking will never pass. Many other systems are slowly breaking down all the time. Clueless management and poor construction will ensure a long career with no chance of advancement.
