Sad to witness a great company in the throes of self destruction

Pros

It used to be a great place to work with a few exceptions; one being lower than industry average pay. In fact it was always rated among the top employers for places to work. We were almost treated like part of the family. Benefits and PTO was, and still is fantastic!

Cons

Upper management changed and in came the "consultants" and out went all of the talent in lieu of contracting all critical work overseas. Publishing as an industry is in flux and requires new ideas to stay in the game. Unfortunately management wasn't producing these ideas and the employees who had them, along with a vision for growth in a tough market, were ignored, and then eventually laid off. The current upper management is even more clueless and believes everything is solved not by their own new thinking, but by saving dollars by contracting everything to India.

Pros

-- if you're in the right department there is a real potential to advance, in others there is virtually none. --the company seems to be making some good moves, albeit belatedly, with regard to growing their tech fluency. --decent benefits package (as of my last day there)

Cons

--This is a company in the midst of large-scale changes, Wiley has been laying people off steadily for the last several years and will likely continue to do so --One's experience at Wiley can vary greatly depending on the department one works in and morale reflects this --Salaries are industry average at best, i.e.: low by any nominal standard --Wiley only seems to have discovered the Internet around 2006, particularly with regard to scholarly/academic publishing. Until very recently, corporate strategy in this regard amounted to a head-in-the-sand approach.

Pros

Relaxed atmosphere (too relaxed), talented employees (but undervalued), decent benefits w/ a decent amount of vacation time (to distract that the pay is low).

Cons

Currently restructuring, most employees are being laid off due to work is being outsourced to India. And those that are laid off are forced to stay months after in order to recieve severance. Wiley seems to spend their milions buying other companies instead of creating their own original ideas. The original ideas they do have, don't make any sense and have no direction.
