Poor senior management and pay, great time off & benefits

Pros

Good time off benefits Some very good colleagues

Cons

Bad Structure - A string of unsuccessful restructures. A lack of accountability from the senior management team. Some very dysfunctional directors & VPs being promoted and enabled. Senior management does not want constructive feedback or input, only sycophantic support. Effective teams are reduced in size (or kept the same with an increase in work), ineffective teams as expanded. More likely than not, if you are joining a research or marketing team, you are taking over more than one role that was never backfilled. Very low pay - expect $40-50k for junior roles, $60-75k for mid-level roles (including management of people) and $90+ for 'senior management roles. For the UK, expect £28-35 for junior roles, £40-60 for mid-level roles, and £65+ for senior management roles. Inconsistent rules for pay that are secretive and act as 'blockers' around promotions. Poor management is swept under the rug or sometimes rewarded.

Great work environment, with some drawbacks

Pros

Wiley has a great culture and work-life balance. The people at Wiley are very friendly, supportive, and fun colleagues. I made many long-term friends while working there. In general, people were smart, dedicated, but not too serious. The work environment was collaborative and I never worked long hours. There were also considerable career opportunities. I was encouraged to explore other internal roles and was promoted twice within four years. Also, Wiley had great vacation time!

Cons

The downsides to working at Wiley were fairly straightforward and expected for the publishing industry: the salaries were low and the company wasn't doing very well. There were a lot of reorganizations when I worked there and several rounds of layoffs. I did worry about my job security a few times. Also, the parental leave was very low.
