Pros

The World Bank is multi-cultural, lots of extremely smart and motivated people all in the location. Despite recent reforms, the benefits are still good - vacation, pension, parental leave, etc.

Cons

The work environment has become toxic in the last 2 years, reforms and fear of losing one's job have destabilized the organization and have demotivated otherwise excellent and committed staff.

Pros

Good experience to place on resume

Cons

Expected to work very long hours, permanent staff rely on consultants and temps to do their work and then will take credit for it, a lot of very unprofessional and arrogant staff at all levels, hard to trust your colleagues, fearful and passive/aggressive work environment

Pros

As an IO, you will meet smart and resourceful entrepreneurs; travel extensively; and be challenged to come up with innovative financial solutions.

Cons

Whole environment is way too bureaucratic and political where investment decisions are made primarily based on non-economic and non-financial reasons. With its heightened aversion to risk, IFC tends to predominantly support the already established, well resourced business cadre in emerging markets (or those who ply their trade there) compared to struggling local entrepreneurs with good ideas. All in all, people are way too concerned with keeping their jobs and furthering their careers at the firm than IFC's mission to alleviate poverty.
