Pros

Management can be influenced with carefully prepared metrics and arguments, though this is costly to do for all proposals and projects. There are good benefits and relatively good job security.

Cons

Common business efficiency objectives are not uniformly held. Academic freedom is touted as a birthright, but it seems irrelevant for non-academics. Back office staff really should focus on optimizing operations and saving resources. There is not much diversity. Parking must be paid for.

Pros

Access to a number of facilities and resources that are cutting edge, also a lot of financial and administrative resources.

Cons

Relationships can be brisk with professors and others in managing, power positions. Lots of pressure to produce in a little time. Some areas of the university are not the most collegial, when it comes to working together.
