Pros

The community has been the best part. Caring and loving environment while excelling in reaching a world of Kids! Honestly I have had flexibility in implementing different methods not from not having club (youth service) to having just basketball and open mic to having club with longer message times. Has decent benefits 401k options, Insurance, Gym, etc... This helps with trying to care for a full family yet remain in ministry.

Cons

Downside is simply just lower then average pay. Teachers in our local school are always on strike and they get paid poorly but I struggle with having smaller pay then first year teachers.

Pros

There is a lot of autonomy, and freedom to do what works, depending on where you are on staff.

Cons

Leadership at the top is extremely regressive, numbers-focused, and narrow. Opportunities for advancement are basically non-existent, unless you want to be a regional director (which is entirely administrative, no real hands-on work). Some regions have terrible leadership and everyone suffers.

You don’t want to know how the sausage is made

Pros

Great camp locations and great benefits (especially for a non-profit). Getting to see kids "birthed" each week was an amazing experience. Worked with some very creative people.

Cons

Ever heard the expression “You don’t want to know how the sausage is made”? Stay on the volunteer side of YL and you’ll keep your idealism. You’ll notice that very few of the reviews on this site related to the camping side of YL are positive. I worked full-time at more than one property and saw way too many unethical and self-serving financial decisions by managers as well as by field staff. It was an amazing place to be but when over 80% of my time & energy was spent dealing with “politics” and placating egos rather than taking care of guests/campers, I knew it was time to go.
