Not a healthy or professional environment.

Pros

The location is nice. The pay, while a bit low for the current DFW market, is reasonable and not an issue. Co-workers there are generally wonderful people. Due to the experience of the team the product has the chance to be excellent. Finally, the people there are very accepting of different cultures and people.

Cons

The work environment is not in my opinion very healthy for the rank and file employees. The cubicles are cramped and unwieldy. The culture there is to interrupt people when they are working with complete disregard to the losses of productivity. You are expected to work odd hours with little to no notification. The HR side is highly unorganized; it wasn't un-common for people to not be issued their health insurance cards in a timely manner due to the annual enrollment starting very late in the year. The policies and rules change at the drop of a hat and promises of benefits have been, in my opinion, often hollow. The paid time off is not enough considering it was common for people to be expected to take their laptops with them on vacation and be 'on' at all times. Some long term employees make the workplace uncomfortable by sharing personal information company wide. Nepotism is common. Code quality for the product was always an issue. Bugs and bad practices where ignored for years leading to panicked support calls and uncomfortable meetings with less that confident customers. Finally, the CEO has made it a common practice to email angst filled rants to the entire company. Again, in my opinion, not a healthy environment for employees that wish to comport themselves in professional manner and expect the same from their peers or supervisors. Avoid this company unless you need work or need to build your resume.

Pros

Fantastic place to work for developers who love working with open source. Company culture is excellent in my opinion; a lot of bright & talented people, high diversity, including women engineers, transgender friendly workplace, racially/culturally diverse, and very progressive. Management takes care of those who contribute by giving generous bonuses for success in the marketplace. Engineering culture has improved in recent years, and our new CTO is doing a lot to foster that. I'm seeing a lot more investment in training, test engineering, emphasis on code quality, and migration away from legacy technology. Many employees are free to work from home as needed, with no strict in-office hours; this is especially true for developers but I see it with others as well. The benefits are excellent; not many companies as high a percentage of insurance costs, and they promising to increase this even more next year.

Cons

A lot of developers get pulled into support, due to code quality issues, lack of adequate testing of releases, lack of good issue tracking & knowledgebase, and lack of strong configuration management. Fortunately these are solvable problems and I am seeing strong signs of this situation improving. (see Pros above) We are not out of the woods yet but out of challenge comes opportunity for creative solutions.
