Pros

You get to work on projects with real scale, e.g, Rumalia, Iraq and Azerbaijan - that are not available outside the supermajors (Shell, Exxon etc). People are willing to teach / mentor junior staff, and the work / life balance is excellent. Pay is okay but not as good as small oil companies.

Cons

It takes a long while to get anywhere, with little opportunity for rapid progression. To get on you've probably got to spend some time working in some fairly unpleasant places. In recent years you get lot less control over what type of jobs you want to do than you did, say, 5 years ago.

Pros

- The best group of people I have ever worked with in terms of intellect, capability and ambition - Really good work-life balance; in effect you work your own hours and can flex as required, can work from home 1 day a week as long as you deliver how you do it is of minimal importance - Autonomy in role - Transparency of Senior Management in comms re: Deepwater Horizon

Cons

- BP's performance management leaves a lot to be desired. No feedback culture whatsoever. - Set on hiring at Senior levels so very little if any succession planning means that top talent gets frustrated and leaves - Fairly low morale post Gulf of Mexico incident; BP doesnt seem to be acknowledging this either
