Where to start… dunnhumby is an extremely challenging place to work as a UX or Product Designer — and not in a positive way.
The product organisation is still very immature, including at the product leadership level. Combined with this, the business operates within a complex domain and has committed to ambitious client launch commitments for a product that is still largely unbuilt. The result is significant pressure on the teams responsible for delivery.
Because many people privately believe these commitments are unrealistic, a large number of meetings and day-to-day interactions are overshadowed by fatigue, frustration and a general sense that the situation is unsustainable.
There also appears to be limited interest in building a product grounded in user research. Instead, designers and researchers are frequently directed to execute on the vision of a single product leader, even when research evidence suggests the proposed solution may not address real user needs.
Many designers I’ve spoken with are actively considering leaving the company, largely due to concerns about wellbeing, professional growth, and the ability to practice good product design.
Several long-tenured employees (20+ years) mentioned that this level of organisational chaos is not unusual for the company. The business has experienced significant leadership turnover in recent years, including multiple CEOs and Chief Product Officers, which appears to have contributed to the lack of product maturity.
Culturally, the organisation feels highly corporate and formal, which is unusual for a product and technology environment, though perhaps more typical of a consulting culture. Internal meetings tend to be overly formal, and discussions about failure, learning, or the need to pivot are rarely handled openly. This creates an environment where it is difficult to practice modern product development, which depends on transparency, experimentation, and learning from mistakes.
In terms of work–life balance, I did not personally work significant overtime, largely because I was disciplined about maintaining boundaries. However, despite this, I often felt stressed and unhappy at work. The broader atmosphere within the team was frequently tense, with many colleagues experiencing high levels of pressure and frustration, which made it difficult to fully disconnect from work outside of working hours.
From my perspective, many of the challenges feel systemic and unlikely to improve without stronger and more experienced product leadership.
Ultimately, the organisation seems to combine some of the most difficult aspects of both startups and large corporates — the chaos and lack of structure often associated with early-stage companies, alongside the slow decision-making, risk aversion and bureaucracy of a large enterprise.
