Pros

old outdated stacks, things move slowly if that's what you wanted.

Cons

Working at eBay has been one of the most frustrating experiences of my career. The way they handle layoffs is shockingly cold and bare minimum. Employees are given little to no notice, and severance packages seem designed to do nothing more than barely comply with the WARN Act—nothing beyond what’s legally required. Compared to other major tech companies like Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta, the difference is night and day. Those companies at least attempt to support impacted employees with extended notice periods, internal mobility options, or time to find new roles. At eBay, you get none of that—just a quick exit and a “good luck.” What makes it worse is the broader strategy. While laying off employees in the U.S., the company has been ramping up hiring elsewhere, including opening a large office in Mumbai and aggressively expanding the workforce there. It sends a clear message about how little they value their existing employees. Morale is low, trust in leadership is nonexistent, and the culture feels increasingly transactional. Hard work and loyalty are not rewarded here—they’re discarded when convenient. If you’re considering joining, think twice. This is not a company that stands by its employees when it matters most.

Pros

Opportunity to work on large-scale global marketplace products used by millions of users. Collaborative and supportive teams, with knowledgeable colleagues across different regions. Good work-life balance compared to many tech companies. Strong brand value and good learning opportunities, especially in large distributed systems and e-commerce. Exposure to cross-functional teams and global stakeholders.

Cons

So far so good, haven't seen any cons yet

Pros

work/life balance can be good (depends on the team) a lot of talented people some projects are genuinely interesting and contemporary (others may lag behind the industry by a few years or more)

Cons

eBay has been around for a long time, and it shows. Like in a geology class, when examining layers of rock, some of the code reads the same way. Lots of reinventing the wheel - e.g. you might spend a year on a project and then learn that another team did essentially the same thing. Politics... The cycles of over-hiring and layoffs are pretty demoralizing, both from a human standpoint and in terms of simply having a cohesive vision.
