In his State of the Union address, President Trump pledged to end new HIV transmissions in the United States by 2030. He should start by looking at what is working right here, in his home state of New York, which is the national leader in the effort to end the HIV epidemic, thanks in no small part to Governor Andrew Cuomo's leadership. While we are encouraged by the President’s words at the #SOTU, and the renewed attention his administration plans to pay to this critical fight, actions speak far louder than words, and the Trump administration has taken a number of steps that have actively undercut efforts to end the HIV epidemic. If the President is serious about this commitment, he must follow New York’s lead: implement policies that address health disparities and promote access to health care. New York, once the epicenter of the AIDS epidemic, has made great strides towards reaching the goal of ending the HIV/AIDS Epidemic by 2020, but there is still work to be done. Expanding eligibility to Medicaid Special Needs Health Plans (SNPs) for populations at higher risk for acquiring HIV can help reduce new infections and help us #EndAIDSNY2020. "SNPs were founded to provide specialized support to people living with HIV/AIDS and other complex health issues. One of the crucial services these plans have been able to provide is access to sexual health services, including pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), which are key to HIV prevention." In 2004, 22-year-old Corey Johnson, uninsured and newly diagnosed with HIV, walked into Apicha Community Health Center, where he received comprehensive health care & was empowered to take control of his health. Last month he became the Speaker of the New York City Council. That is the kind of opportunity community health centers support for millions of Americans. Community health centers have been instrumental in the effort to end AIDS and are essential to the continued fight. Thankfully, Congress’ short-term budget resolution will fund community health centers for another two years. But while this measure will help to ensure that community health centers continue to provide vital services, it means that they will face fiscal uncertainty again in the near future.
