On the surface it doesn’t look like much, but a prototype device held together by duct tape and anchored with plastic bottles could solve a problem that’s been plaguing an Indianapolis community for decades. The device earned a group of teenagers from the Best Buy Teen Tech Center® powered by Klipsch at the Martin Luther King Community Center in Indianapolis a trip to Silicon Valley. They designed the prototype filtration device to filter water at Belmont Beach. The beach is polluted with sewer and storm runoff water and for years was a dumping ground for industrial chemicals and slaughterhouse waste. Read the full story.
Best Buy Health and Mass General Brigham are collaborating to support a new model of healthcare delivery that serves patients where they want to be — at home. Together, they will develop solutions to support the transformational movement of shifting healthcare to patients’ homes by improving how quality and safe care are provided with technology and clinical expertise. Their first priority is to scale and support Mass General Brigham’s Home Hospital.
Maryland Best Buy employee Toni knows laughter can go a long way. The part-time virtual sales advisor is always the first to joke with her coworkers. It’s something that helps her share her story with others. “I crack jokes because it makes it easier for people to deal with the situation,” she said. Toni was born with a rare birth defect called cloacle exstrophy. It’s a condition where some of the organs that are normally in the lower abdomen are exposed externally. Toni also has spina bifida and scoliosis and uses a wheelchair.
In partnership with Bose, professional football player Justin Jefferson stopped by the Best Buy Teen Tech Center® at Summit Academy OIC earlier this week. During his visit at the Teen Tech Center, powered by Koch Trucking, Jefferson checked out tech projects youth participants were working on and spent time in the music recording studio. Following the tour, Jefferson was part of a Q&A session with youth, where he shared more about his career and talked to teens about their future career aspirations.
More than 40 youth from Best Buy Teen Tech Centers™ across Los Angeles learned about entrepreneurship and market research this summer. Then they put their skills to use in a tech innovation challenge. The teens’ ideas varied from environmentally sustainable school lunches, to an app to find local music events, to an educational video game. “I was very impressed with how the young people took issues that they saw in their communities and industry and explored new ways to address them,” said Chheav, a Best Buy social impact manager. Best Buy interns enjoying summer of learning, fun • Editor’s note: Hannah Sethi, the author of this article, is part of the internship program and a senior at the University of Wisconsin. She is working with our talent acquisition team this summer. This summer, 115 Best Buy interns are gaining valuable professional experience while making a lasting impact on their teams. This is the first time our interns have worked in a hybrid model, spending some time on site and remote, similar to many of our corporate employees. Throughout the program, our interns have received opportunities for professional development, networking and some unforgettable fun with their teams and fellow interns. They’ve also participated in a variety of Best Buy inclusion groups, fully immersing themselves in the company’s culture.
Three years ago, Geek Squad Agent Kriegon Newby visited his uncle in California and knew it was where he wanted to be. “After my vacation ended, I sent out applications to California stores,” said Kriegon, who was living in Indiana. He got hired at Store 873 in Colma (near San Francisco), packed his car and drove west. Since then, Kriegon has not only built a life on the coast, but two careers: When he’s not traveling in his Geekmobile helping people with their home technology, he’s helping people reach fitness goals at a studio. “I’m up by 3:45 a.m. I coach three classes in the morning, and then I work my nine to five at Best Buy,” Kriegon said. Since joining Best Buy in 2018, Kriegon has discovered his natural strength is connecting with customers. His supervisor, Jay Lisby, would agree. “He has this intrinsic passion. He cares about the individual customer experience,” said Jay, Market 8 home services senior manager. “It’s something you really can’t teach.” That passion translates well to strength and endurance training, too. Kriegon has found parallels between his two roles, including being encouraging, friendly and willing to explain things — whether it’s about tech or fitness. He also aims to bring the same level of high energy and passion to each.
