The College Board recognizes that welcoming a child into a family is a special time. It’s also stressful, and we want to help support our employees and their families in a more flexible way. That’s why we’re excited to announce an enhancement to our paid parental leave benefit. New parents – mothers, fathers, adoptive, foster, and those currently on parental leave – will now be able to take 8 weeks of paid leave, up from 4 weeks, as of June 1. This increase from 4 to 8 weeks is in response to staff feedback. We were moved by the stories we heard from employee parents about transitioning back to work, anxiety about childcare, difficulty juggling multiple work-life priorities, and more. Our HR team listened, and with the support our senior leadership, enhanced the policy. We are excited to support our new parents in this way and hope it will help smooth their transition.
On March 26, 2019, nearly 1,800 College Board staff descended upon Baltimore for our third biannual all-employee meeting, Pencils Down. This hugely popular internal event brings together staff for two days of connecting with one another and our mission. We heard stories of perseverance and determination from students and staff, learned the deep impact of our work, enjoyed performances by local Baltimore talent, took AP classes, and had down time at a Maryland Science Center fete. Service was a recurrent theme at the event, as we kicked things off with a volunteer project that involved 340 staff working with 320 Baltimore high school juniors on building college lists and more. We emphasized the importance of giving back by erecting this giant pencil sculpture made up of 1,500 school supplies that was featured on site. These supplies, along with over 400 books, were donated to a local Baltimore charity immediately following Pencils Down.
