As a speech language pathologist, it just makes sense that communication is so important to Carol Edley. But it goes beyond using the latest Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) technology. "The technology, like eye gaze, is a fantastic tool, but establishing strong, basic communication is essential for the child and the parents," Carol said. Over the course of her 47 years in the world of speech therapy, Carol has employed many tried-and-true therapy methods that are still just as important as technology, such as sign language, gestures, body language and pictures. "I'll pretty much try anything twice," Program Manager Breanna Anderson said with a laugh, "I say 'pretty much' because I won't do skydiving!" The thought of physically opening a door of a plane and stepping out into the expansive sky may seem too daunting for Breanna; yet, her role within The Center for Children's Health can be quite like that. When working with families in the community discussing the issues they are facing, Breanna needs to embrace the vulnerability that a novice skydiver would feel on that first jump. "They have a trust in Cook Children's because of our incredible reputation," she said, "but we have to connect on a more personal level at times." "Gentle." "Kind." "Outstanding." "The best tech ever." These are the words families share to describe Zach Deviney, a polysomnographic technologist in Cook Children's Sleep Study. "Those are the same words that could describe all of my coworkers that I work with daily or nightly," he humbly said. "It's a group effort and bigger than the individuals. We all take care of our patients with a passion for what we do for a living." Polysomnography Manager Amy Gray agrees whole-heartedly. "Each sleep technologist on our team of 10 takes great pride in their work and is extremely creative in their endeavors to obtain a clean sleep study for our patients," she shared. “We don't just spit on a fire, we put out a fire.” – Tonya Fuqua, DDS, director of the Save a Smile program. Save a Smile, a program led by The Center for Children's Health at Cook Children’s, connects children without any form of insurance, or who aren’t eligible for Medicaid, with a network of dentists who volunteer with free services. Founded in 2013, Save a Smile provides preventative and restorative dental care for elementary students who are at high risk for dental disease.
