Getting ready for the Fort Worth Cowtown Marathon, Inc. this weekend? We've all been inspired by one special patient who completed his own version of a marathon. Despite his diagnosis of a rare form of cancer, 13-year-old Joey Belles crossed the finish line last week, becoming the first Cook Children's Health Care System patient to walk 26 miles during treatment. More of Joey's story is below. Would you like to be a part of this amazing team of nurses, therapists and patient care techs? Meet Kennedy, 25, the manager of E-Learning Solutions at Cook Children's, who previously worked in our Simulation Lab. Kennedy’s own hands-on introduction to the system began when she was a junior volunteer for four summers in high school. She was also a recipient of our Presidents’ Scholarship for deserving college students who are the children of system employees. Cook Children’s is interwoven through Kennedy’s entire life, as her mom has worked here for 34 years and she grew up hearing about Cook Children’s. And the family connections don’t stop there – Kennedy’s sister and her aunt are both nurses here, and her uncle is a chaplain.

As any parent knows, kids are not little adults. They have endless energy, huge imaginations and sometimes they require medical care specialized for their unique needs. For this reason, Cook Children’s has been dedicated to the health and healing of children in Fort Worth and surrounding areas for more than 100 years. Now, we’re excited to announce we are the only hospital in North Texas to be verified as a Level I Children’s Surgery Center by the American College of Surgeons Children’s Surgery Verification Quality Improvement Program (ACS CSV).
