From helping to power a military base in Iraq to supporting power restoration efforts in Puerto Rico, our Manager of Electric Service Rob Grzela (front row left in the top group photo) has served all over the world as a member of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers 249th Engineer Battalion. When he’s not working to serve our customers and communities, Grzela leads a team of veterans (including several of his colleagues) who train new members of the Battalion in the basics of linework. This year, their two-week training was held at Joint Base Cape Cod. “I love linework—it's a passion for me. The best part about training the reservists is that I get to work with people who are all have the same mindset. It’s not about whose smarter or stronger but about getting the mission completed.”

“The part of the rodeo that means the most to me is the hurt man rescue. It’s an adrenaline rush when you’re doing it, but this situation is something that can happen in real life when you’re working on the lines. Safety is our priority, and this kind of training can save a life.” —Jermaine Martin-Riley, six-year lineman competing for the first time in the Eversource Regional Rodeo on May 20

It's not their first rodeo—this hybrid Eversource MA and Eversource NH journeyman team won the speed climb competition at the #InternationalLinemansRodeo in 2016. On May 20, Jeff Sutherland, Jason Henley and Bob Michaud (from left) will showcase their skills at the Eversource Regional Rodeo. "We specialize in the speed climb and hurt man rescue. The best part of the rodeo is just getting out there and meeting up with other teams from across the country we've competed against over the years, and the comradery," said Sutherland, an overhead transmission line leader.

The Eversource Regional Rodeo on May 20 won’t be the first time lineman Derek Drace has competed. In fact, he’s qualified to compete at the International Lineman’s Rodeo and Expo in Kansas in 2019, 2022, and 2021. “With the speed climb—you’re either fast or slow and that’s it, but the hurt man rescue is what my team does best, and it’s the most important one to know well. The rodeo is a lot of fun and I’m looking forward to it this year.”

Our team frequently encounters emergencies while working in our communities 24/7/365. When Gas Meter Technicians Vinny Foxx and Sean Tierney found themselves at the scene of a crash in Needham, their safety training kicked in as the duo aided the driver and an injured pedestrian. “When I saw the crash, I just reacted. I did what anybody else would do,” said Foxx (left). “The safety trainings we take prepare you for anything—eventually it becomes second nature,” added Tierney (right).
