Jana Butler has always felt a calling towards respiratory therapy. Now, she’s a leader. Manager of Respiratory Care Services, Jana joined the IU Health West team more than a decade ago. Her journey in healthcare started in an ambulance. She was a student shadowing an emergency medical technician (EMT). A call for a motor vehicle accident one night changed the course of her entire career. At the scene, Butler manually ventilated and provided CPR for the patient. “After we got (the patient) to the hospital, I said ‘That was amazing.’ The paramedic looked at me and said, ‘If you liked it that much, then you should become a respiratory therapist,’” Butler says. Crystal Hinson Miller, president of IU Health Foundation, is a national leader in healthcare philanthropy. Here, she shares her personal reflections: Most of you likely know that IU Health is Indiana’s largest healthcare system, serving more than 1 million patients a year. What you might not know is that, with 38,000 team members, IU Health also is the largest employer headquartered in Indiana. When we consider those two facts, we are led to recognize another: The culture of IU Health is about a lot more than our organization. It has a ripple effect that touches people, families and communities all across the state. That’s why we see our recognition as a “Culture of Good” organization as more than just another award. Presented by Fishers-based Culture of Good Inc. to celebrate organizations “making extraordinary contributions in sustainability, social responsibility and their community,” the award affirms that, in addition to being committed to providing excellent healthcare, we are committed to doing good. Heather Hohenberger knew she wanted to be an Operating Room nurse since she was a nursing student. Now, she is the clinical manager for the Operating Room and Endoscopy at IU Health North. Heather Hohenberger was drawn to surgery immediately. While in school to become a licensed practical nurse (LPN), she was caring for a patient who needed surgery. She knew right away. “Being able to care for a patient while they are their most vulnerable, I felt drawn to that,” she explains. “You are the patient’s advocate when they cannot advocate for themselves.” She had always been someone who enjoyed fixing things. As she learned more about that aspect of healthcare, she also realized she was interested in the technical side of the Operating Room (OR).
