Just a few years ago Scott Youmans was working in lawn care with no medical experience. After taking part in a new program through IU Health LifeLine that trains people for the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) field, Youmans completed the EMT program successfully, followed by the Paramedic program. "I wanted to be able to give them the best that I could be and educate myself to the furthest level that I could," said Youmans, who now holds the certification to work as a paramedic. "I am your nurse. I will meet you in your pain, fear and loss. Together we will hold space for your soul to grieve and to breathe and find strength, knowledge and community to find hope in tomorrow."
Matthew Siregar joined IU Health in 2015 working in the Medical Progressive Care unit of Methodist Hospital. He transferred to the Cardiovascular Critical Care Unit and then moved to the Transplant Unit. Growing up in South Florida, Siregar was born in Miami but moved to Stuart , Fla. when he was a toddler. “My father immigrated to the United States from Indonesia after he met my mother on a cruise ship. She was a passenger and he was a wine steward,” said Siregar, His mother worked her way up to director of operations for a large physician office in Florida and his father worked maintenance at a hospital in West Palm Beach. After high school, Siregar initially thought about becoming a commercial airline pilot. In different ways, both of his parents influenced his decision to go into the medical field. His father was diagnosed with brain cancer the summer after his high school graduation and Siregar stayed at home helping his family. “My father did pass away a year after his diagnosis and going through that experience ignited my passion for the nursing profession,” said Siregar. He attended nursing school at Shenandoah University in Winchester, VA. and received his master’s degree from UIndy. He is currently working on his PhD in nursing where his research is focused on improving outcomes in immigrant patient populations. From PCA to nurse: Two women share similar journeys at IU Health West. Meghan Sanders and Alexes Strickland are both nurses on the third floor Medical-Surgical unit at IU Health West. They both started as patient care assistants (PCAs) and have spent their careers at the hospital on the same unit where they started. Meghan began as a PCA in May of 2019 and Alexes started in July of 2021. They both worked in that role as they completed nursing school, which gave them experience on the unit and helping patients before they graduated. “I thought that it would aid in my learning while in school,” Alexes explained. “I also think all nurses should have some PCA experience before becoming a nurse. It helps you appreciate your techs in the future.” Staying on the unit was an easy decision for both women. They appreciate the team atmosphere and management style. “We all work so well together and really get to know each other on a personal level,” Meghan said. “We as a team develop friendships outside of work and we all lean on one another because we know we can and that it will be reciprocated.” “I learned things as a PCA from both nurses and doctors that have shaped me into the nurse I am today,” Alexes added. “Also, the continued support while I was in school to become a nurse was comforting.” Read more about Alexes and Meghan's stories by visiting the IU Health Thrive Blog (link below). After a pandemic that put enormous strain on healthcare workers, you might wonder what keeps Riley Children’s Health team members coming back day after day. Sure, the paycheck is important, but it’s no surprise that for most, it’s all about the kids. In a bid to help Riley team members reconnect with their purpose, a “Why Wall” sprouted near the entrance to the Maternity Tower Downtown and also at Riley at IU Health North Hospital. The initiative, organized by Riley’s team member engagement group, invites people to grab a piece of paper and write down their “why” before posting it on the wall. The results are sweet, honest and meaningful for those who take the time to read the responses. “To help give kids with cancer the future they deserve.” “I love tiny humans!” “To give back to a hospital that gave to my family.” “I love the difference I am able to make for the families I help.” Jasmine Bundrant, a medical assistant, returned to Riley after working in the adult healthcare world for a few years. As she contemplated her “why,” she said she enjoys the hands-on experience she gets at Riley and that the nurses she works with are very open to teaching her. But mostly, she said, “I love working with the kids and our amazing families.” Read more on this story and life at IU Health & Riley Children's Health by clicking the link below.
