As a self-described old soul, Amber Peck always enjoyed spending time with her grandparents when she younger. Those joyous memories would later inspire her to become a social worker. She first assisted older generations and their families as they navigated hospice or home care, becoming comfortable in listening to their stories and what mattered to them. “Everybody is different. Their journey is different and their kind of care is a little bit different. I became more adept at working with them and their journey with their illness,” Peck said. Now, more than 20 years later, she’s helping connect patients with cancer to resources and reach their goals at IU Health North Hospital. Peck joined IU Health in 2016, first at IU Health University Hospital’s surgery outpatient clinic, and then IU Health North Hospital in 2019. A year later, she began working with patients in the IU Health Joe & Shelly Schwarz Cancer Center in Carmel. Continue the story on our IU Health Thrive Blog. As a nurse on the stem cell unit for Riley Children’s Health, Jake Harmon has plenty of bling on his badge. There’s a Red Shoe award and a Daisy – both recognizing his impact on his patients and families – and there are his certifications as a pediatric nurse and a bone marrow transplant nurse. Today is Certified Nurses Day, recognizing nurses who go above and beyond to earn the highest credentials in their specialty. In the future, Harmon said he might even go for an advanced practice provider license in oncology. He is beloved by his patients and his co-workers and earned the prestigious Margaret Martin Award in 2021, named for a pioneer in patient and family care at Riley. But the bling on his backpack might be even more special than all the honors and credentials. On it are dozens of wristbands given to him by patients who were or are doing battle against cancer. “My backpack is basically my purse,” said the Riley nurse, who’s been on the job for 13 years. “On each strap I have 13 years’ worth of wristbands that kids have given me.” Read the full story by visiting our blog.
To say that Floyd Pinkston Jr. inspired his son, Trey’s career path might be an understatement. Floyd has been a paramedic since the early 1980s. Some of Trey’s earliest memories were when his dad would show up to his school in his flight suit and say hi to him at public engagement events. “He’d land doing a public relations event somewhere and I’d come. There’s a pretty good picture of me and him running up to each other right after he had landed and stepped out of the helicopter,” recalls Trey. “Because of him I’d like to become a flight medic. That’s my ultimate goal.” While Trey works on his goals, he’s also working as an EMT right alongside his dad at the IU Health LifeLine base in Muncie. “I get to see him grow, not only as a young man, but as a very qualified EMT,” said Floyd. “It’s a dream come true… and I’m so proud of him.” Explore careers at IU Health by visiting: iuhealth.org/careers
After 23 years in Human Resources (HR) leadership, Brownlee has worked in retail, education, moving services and healthcare. She’s learned many lessons on how to create a thriving work culture, but as a working mom, she always thinks back to her kids. “They help me think about the future I’m trying to create here for employees,” she explained. “My children are new to the workforce and remind me of the needs and perspectives emerging from our most recent generations, both the Millennial and Z generations.” HR leadership was something Brownlee stumbled into after receiving her master’s degree in Public Health. For the last six years, she’s served as the vice president of Human Resources in the IU Health Indianapolis Suburban Region, which includes IU Health North, Saxony, Tipton and West hospitals. “I'm so glad I came to IU Health, because it connected me back to my mission and grounded me in that space of making meaningful differences in the lives of the people that we serve, our patients and our team members as well,” she said. Rodney Johnson is a new nurse at IU Health Methodist Hospital. He cares for patients on the hospital’s advanced cardio pulmonary unit. “When you get out of nursing school and into the field, it’s a lot different. There’s policy and other additional rules and things you have to learn so I felt like after nursing school I still had a lot left to learn,” said Rodney. “One thing I really like about the hospital here is that they have a really cool program called Foundations… where new grads, for the first week or so, go and shadow a nurse educator and they take you on different units of the hospital and kind of give you that one-to-one training before you hit the floor. I gained a lot of experience just from doing that and then when I got to my floor and got with my preceptor, the preceptor was really surprised with all the things I already knew.” Explore IU Health and RIley Children's Health careers at iuhealth.org/careers

Shelby Cordova joined IU Health Saxony—soon to be IU Health Fishers—in November 2022, shortly after making the trek from Arizona to Indiana with her family a month earlier. Without knowing anyone at the hospital, Cordova, a marriage family therapist and registered nurse, began the onboarding process to join the Adult Surgical Step-down unit. Since she began the process, team members have been extremely kind and open, and Cordova has been able to easily get along with her unit. Most importantly, she’s been able to get back to healing patients physically and emotionally. “I am lucky enough to say that I work with a phenomenal healthcare team. The staff has been friendly, encouraging and helpful in times of stress or need,” Cordova says. “We do our best to support one another and have a good time. I learn something new every shift from this great group of individuals.” Learn more about Shelby's experience as a new IU Health team member on our IU Health Thrive blog, by clicking the link below.
