A new chapter in Indigenous health education has begun. This summer, the inaugural Tilikum Summer Health Experience brought 15 American Indian and Alaska Native college students from across the nation to Portland State University and OHSU for a five-week journey in academic enrichment, clinical exposure, cultural connection and community. “Once you’re part of this program, you become part of the NNACoE community — you have a place at Oregon Health & Science University,” said faculty lead Dr. Shandee Dixon (Apache). Tilikum is the first tribal site in the AAMC’s Minority Serving Institutions Pathway Initiative — expanding access to health professions and helping grow the number of Indigenous clinicians serving the communities that need them most. The program blends virtual learning with in-person experiences, mentorship, clinical shadowing and Indigenous-centered curriculum developed in collaboration with tribal partners.
