Marine wildlife meets healthcare! 🐢 Meet Sophia, a 140-pound loggerhead turtle that was found stranded in the Indian River Lagoon with multiple fractures on her shell and a hook sticking out of her mouth. After an unsuccessful attempt to remove over 20 hooks in her gastrointestinal tract, along with fishing line, Orlando Health Melbourne Hospital stepped in to assist. East Coast Zoological Foundation’s Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Center at Brevard Zoo now has more advanced endoscopy tools after collaborating with Orlando Health Melbourne Hospital by facilitating the donation of equipment and instruments from Orlando Health Regional Medical Center Endoscopy Unit, which are better suited to remove foreign objects in animals with unique anatomies like sea turtles. Dr. George Christophi, gastroenterologist at Orlando Health Melbourne Hospital, uses this same equipment every day and shared his technical knowledge with Brevard Zoo's veterinary staff as they will attempt to remove more hooks and lines from Sophia. Physicians from Orlando Health Melbourne Hospital are also supporting the effort by consulting on procedural approaches, cementing a partnership with a shared commitment to innovation, education and community. *All sea turtle work carried out by permitted professionals under MTP #206.
