Materials science case study: A NASCAR racing engine crankshaft was submitted to us for analysis. Our materials science team was asked to investigate cracking discovered within a corner radius in the no. 1 pin journal. Investigation: The total service history was reported as 11,739,518 cycles. Analysis indicated the cracking was due to bending fatigue progression, which initiated at a high-stress location within the no. 1 pin journal corner radius. Material flaws and abusive machining practices often present preferential sites for crack initiation to occur in high-stress locations such as crankshaft bearing journals. Check out the photograph of the cracked NASCAR crankshaft as received for analysis. This image shows the crankshaft snout repositioned in the original location prior to the client’s opening of the crack. The crack was located in the no. 1 pin journal corner radius (arrow).
