For many families in Detroit, tax foreclosure has become a frightening reality. As Laura Grannemann, VP of Investment at Quicken Loans, explains, “thousands of Detroit renters have been put out of their homes because of landlords who failed to pay their tax bills, while low-income homeowners often miss out on tax exemptions that could help them avoid foreclosure.” Since October of 2017, Quicken Loans has paired up with community development corporations, community groups and churches for their “Neighbor to Neighbor” program. They go door-to-door, making sure families have the funds they need to remain in their homes. Additionally, these organizations host workshops to assist Detroiters in applying for tax exemptions. So far, Quicken Loans has contributed $500,000 to the program and at least 35,000 homes out of 65,000 have been reached. In 2017, People magazine recognized Quicken Loans on their Companies That Care list. Today, we’re honored that People magazine is raising awareness around our “Neighbor to Neighbor” program and showcasing the dedication of our community partners.

We stopped by our Cleveland office to check out the classy, modern look of their space in the Higbee building. Once a Higbee department store in the early to mid-20th century, today it's home to our 400+ team members on the fourth and fifth floors. In June 2016, Quicken Loans moved to the Higbee building and worked with local contractors and its Detroit-based dpop design firm to renovate the floors. Although the update is a fresh look, they were able to retain the historical details that defined such an iconic building.
Our commitment to advancing the skills of our teams is a key component of our culture. That’s why we encourage team members to join in our annual hackathons. Similar to our four-hour innovation time every Monday, hackathons give technology teams the chance to explore their own ideas and execute them through unconventional programming methods. This year, from January 17 to 18, we held our fifth annual hackathon. Over the course of 24 hours, 170 team members worked in groups to develop innovative solutions that could revolutionize the mortgage experience for our clients and the future of fintech. The results? The winning teams worked with AI technology and showcased solutions that’ll create an even simpler experience for our clients. Hackathons are not only exciting, but they challenge our team members to break out of their comfort zones, and utilize technologies they don’t typically work with. We believe that the future of our business is dependent on our team members’ creativity, and hosting hackathons is one way we’re forging our own path in the fintech industry.
