This holiday season, Independence at Home (IAH), a SCAN community service, partnered with local senior living communities across Long Beach to host heartwarming luncheons for seniors in subsidized housing. These events weren't just about meals, but also focused on fostering connection, celebrating community, and combating isolation and loneliness among older adults. Special thanks to our incredible IAH team and partners who made these events possible!
SCAN is proud to have sponsored two holiday pop-up shops for Second Servings of Houston's Pop-Up Grocery Store program. The sponsorship will go towards providing groceries to low-income seniors in the form of a no-cost shopping experience, allowing local residents who may not normally have easy access to grocery stores to freely choose from an array of groceries right in their building.
This holiday season, we're proud to reflect on the difference SCAN has made in the community throughout 2024. By year-end, SCAN will have awarded a total of $1.3 million to support older adults across California, Arizona, Nevada, Texas, and New Mexico. Here are some of the ways we're taking action as Rebels with a cause: • $1 million awarded to date to vital local services and community support for older adults, addressing nutrition, aging support, transportation, and other basic needs. • $270K to be allocated as part of SCAN's seasonal community giving program to support vulnerable older adults and strengthen communities where they live. • Funding of essential items like warm clothing, food, and hygiene products to older adults in need. • Support of local campaigns and social and specialized programs, including group and holiday-themed activities, designed to foster community connections and combat loneliness and isolation during the holidays.

SCAN has launched a new grocery benefit in partnership with Instacart. "Food insecurity is rising among older Americans, especially among those with chronic conditions and limited incomes,” said Karen Schulte, SCAN Health Plan’s president of Medicare. “At SCAN, we recognize that access to nutritious food is crucial for health and wellbeing. However, barriers such as cost and availability often impede this access. At SCAN, we are dedicated to eliminating these barriers." The new benefit will provide SCAN members with convenient access to nutritious food from local grocers to help them manage chronic conditions, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease, and support their overall health. The results are in and our Rebels have spoken! SCAN's recent 2024 Gallup employee survey results have shown that SCAN has significantly exceeded and achieved high marks in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB). This valuable feedback from around the organization helps drive the initiatives that enable SCAN to continue to foster a workplace that treats everyone fairly, treasures diverse opinions, and allows everyone to feel respected and included. SCAN is excited to unveil its first community center in Nevada! The center, which offers local seniors and SCAN partners a dedicated space for support, had its successful soft opening, with its official grand opening to come in 2025. SCAN looks forward to exploring and promoting even more ways to keep the older adult community in Nevada healthy and independent!
