Did you know that when Anne Bakar stepped into her role as President and CEO in 1987, Telecare only had five programs and about 200 employees? Today, we have 175+ programs, 5,000+ employees, and we serve more than 45,000 people each year. Telecare’s staff members are making this transformation possible. Their ability to be flexible, adaptable, and innovative enables Telecare to rise to the challenge and respond to the needs of our communities. They directly help our customers in operating programs that expand access to care and reduce unnecessary suffering. They make a difference and save lives. Happy 60th to Telecare! Did you know that Telecare was founded in 1965 by Mort Bakar, father to our President and CEO, Anne Bakar? Mort Bakar was a businessman who partnered with Art Gladman, a psychiatrist, and Lida Hahn, a nurse, to create a new type of acute care hospital environment for people with mental illness. They wanted this environment to be homelike, hopeful, and recovery-oriented. They did this by creating a staff culture that was not only positive for staff, but was also therapeutic, contributing to care and treatment of the people they served. This was an innovative approach in 1965, where the “warehousing” of people with mental illness in state hospitals was common, and there were few options for people to get care close to home. Telecare was an early contributor to a larger movement to bring specialized mental health services to people in smaller, more comfortable settings in their local communities, close to family, friends, and their everyday lives. Telecare’s staff members are part of this incredible 60-year legacy. Team Telecare is helping people to get the care they need, when and where they need it, and be able to more forward in their lives!
