It’s time for us to rise up.” Excellence Girls Middle Academy held a two-day retreat for its 400 young women, focused on sisterhood and girls’ access to education worldwide. The young women participated in a variety of activities and discussions aimed at challenging stereotypes about young girls, and also watched the documentary, Girls Rising. “I want you to be as powerful, as confident, and capable as you can be.” Former First Lady Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey surprised a group of young women, including 8 of our own Uncommon high schoolers, at the headquarters of O, the Oprah Magazine. Our students had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet Mrs. Obama, to hear her talk about her memoir, and to ask her some poignant questions about the challenges she faced as First Lady and what keeps her motivated.
