We want your work at Amtrak to be more than a job — we want it to be a fulfilling experience where you find challenging and rewarding opportunities, respect among colleagues, competitive pay, benefits that protect you and your family, and a high performance culture that recognizes and values your contributions and helps you reach your career goals. We recognize your contributions through a competitive total rewards offering that supports your personal and professional life.
Mechanical department: 401K with Fidelity; no match. Vacation doesn't start until 12 months employed, then you start with a week. At 24 months you get two weeks, three at year 8, four at year 17, and five at year 25. Major medical, dental, & vision is $204 per month for one person or the whole family. $ 20 regular doctor, $35 for specialist, $75 for ER; waived if admitted, covered yearly vision screenings, and covered twice a year dental screenings; $50 deductible for single and $100 deductible for family . Prescriptions are $5-10 generic. Military leave is only paid during reserve/guard annual tour. 20,000 ADD plan. 10 paid holidays.
The worst thing about our benefits package is that we are up for contract negotiations and Amtrak wants to gut our benefits to save them money. We'll see what happens.

This is for management benefits (agreement/union employees benefits are absolutely amazing, probably the best you will ever come across anywhere)
Best - great 401k. That's about it.
Worst - health insurance. Expensive and doesn't cover much (it use to be very good, 4-5 years ago). Maturity leave is non-existent for women.

We have great benefits at Amtrak, Aetna insurance (choose your provider), an employee agreement 401k, and a Railroad retirement for you and your spouse, I would say that it would be a challenge to find anything as good somewhere else.

The best thing is your travel is free depending on high or low season.
The worst thing is no sick leave, no workers comp, no state disability, no matching of 401K, no choices of health insurance only what the union decides, salary starts at 75% and each year they add 5% and most important is no security screenings of passengers or luggage.

They have very liberal vacation and sick day policy.
