You’re only eligible to deduct withholdings the first January 1 after you’ve been employed for a full year, and then employer matching one full year after that. There’s no flexibility or exception, even if you have a very early January start date. So let’s say you start on January 3, 2024. You can’t start contributing to your 401(k) until January 1, 2026, and you’re not eligible for employer matching until January 1, 2027, which means you’ll get your first employer match in Q1 2028. Absurdly bad policy compared to their peers.
