A few days a week only, but still something that saves you from taking a day off, if you need to be at home.

My department offered work from home but there were many groups which did not because the nature of their roles was different.

They don't provide you any of the connectivity or tools (i.e. phone, supplies, etc.) necessary to work from home other than a company supplied laptop. Pretty much any costs (i.e. copying, postage, paper, phone, etc.) come out of the employee's pocket and are not reimbursable. Company does monitor if you are actually online and working when you are connected via VPN both by remote scanning of laptop and availability via IM tools.
