Principal is self funded, it is no better than any other firm in town. Still a fair amount of fighting with United Health on whether something was covered or not.

To be honest the insurance at The Principal is well in a word - awful. The PPO is administered by United Health Care and they are in business to reduce costs. Perscription coverage is attrocious - an rx that cost $20 on my previous plan now cost $125. If your partner/spouse is eligable for insurance from their employer you are penalized with a MUCH higher rate. For a family plan with a covered spouse/partner it is OVER $400@ payperiod. If your spouse is NOT eligable for coverage its around $200@ pay period.
Pre-approval is a long and ardous process and may take multiple attempts and additional testing to recieve. There is no "co-pay" until your deductible is met - typical is @$2000 for a family and/or $500/individual. So before you see on penny in benefit you have to submit $500 in expenses for a single individual and then they start getting the benefit. But noone else does until their $500 is met OR the $2000 for the family.
Thank goodness I am nolonger covered by them - I recieve insurance from my spouse for 1/3 the cost of Principal and with MUCH better benefits. If health insurance is important to you beware.

Went downhill with ACA. HSA compatible plan is okay and they contribute $1000 to your HSA for you.

They are a high deductible insurance plan as the only option.

Used to be better when Principal offered Health Insurance. Since Obamacare, Principal sold their Health Insurance business and company healthcare transferred to United Healthcare/Optum, which is average overall.....some good and some bad.

They have both PPO & High Deductible options available.
